Gang Arrested for Stealing Payphone Change
A Verizon employee and three accomplices face charges of stealing payphone change to buy luxury automobiles, renovate their homes and go on lavish vacations.
Authorities say Mario Colon took multiple trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas and bought jewelry, a plasma TV, a Mercedes and a Land Rover with coins he pilfered from Verizon payphones in the New York City area, the New York Daily News reported.
Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson authorized the arrest of Colon, 35, and Edison Burgos, 32, Raphael Burgos, 31, and Louis Ortiz, 30, all of the Bronx.
Authorities say the gang was able to steal more than $50,000 in just the past five months and the theft may have begun years ago.
